The village of Cuddington and Sandiway were very different in 1881 as can be seen from the old map. The first thing to note is that the village of "Cuddington" was centred on Mill Lane Chapel and Yew Tree Cottage.
Cuddington Station, with it's large goods yard and the White Barn Inn are identified quite separately some distance from the village centre of those days. The smithy at the junction of Smithy Lane and Warrington Road in the adjacent village of Brinn, where the Yogurt factory now is, can be clearly identified. Delamere House was on the site of the present Delamere Park development and the area to the north of Norley Road, where the playing field now is, was known as Pemberton Green. The adjacent hamlet of Cartlick by Cartlick Moss is shown. The spelling has changed, it's now "Cartledge Moss" but the Moss is still there. The track shown from the ancient house "Portobello" on Norley Road to Cartlick Moss, now known as Rosslyn Lane, is clearly visible
The original village of Cuddington is in fact almost completely unchanged. You really can go back to yesteryear. Instead of just flashing past in your car take a walk along Cuddington Lane from Mill Lane Chapel past Cuddington Hall Farm and Yew Tree Cottage and on to Top Farm, you really are walking in the Cuddington of 1881. But keep an eye and an ear open for the cars because some people really do drive to fast along our village lanes.
